For single-family homes, testing isn't legally required but is strongly recommended before any renovation that might disturb materials installed before 1981.

Penalties for non-compliance can be severe, including fines up to $25,000 per day per violation.
Asbestos in Older Michigan Homes
Many Michigan homes built before 1981 contain asbestos materials. Common locations include pipe and duct insulation, floor tiles (especially 9"x9" tiles), textured ceilings and walls, cement siding and roofing, and vermiculite insulation in attics.
If these materials are in good condition and undisturbed, they generally don't pose an immediate health risk. However, any planned renovation or repair work should be preceded by professional testing.
